Lecture: Edgar Allan Poe's Honeymoon in Petersburg Petersburg VA
Union Train Station
Join author Jeff Abugel, owner and restorer of the Hiram Haines Coffee House (in which Poe spent his honeymoon), for a lecture about the little known details of Poe’s time in Petersburg. Visit historicpetersburgfoundation.org for the latest details. Sponsored by the Historic Petersburg Foundation. Admission is free.

More Details Below:
PETERSBURG – On Wednesday, May 19, the Historic Petersburg Foundation, Inc. (HPF) and the City of Petersburg’s Department of Tourism will sponsor a program entitled “Edgar Allan Poe’s Petersburg Honeymoon.” The program is free and will take place at 7 p.m. at Union Station at 103 River Street in Petersburg. It will be presented by local businessman Jeff Abugel, who, along with his wife Beverly Rivers, owns and is currently renovating 12 West Bank Street, the building where Poe spent his honeymoon. The building is also currently the site of Rivers’ Edge Interiors, which Abugel and Rivers own and operate.
On May 16, 1836 Edgar Allan Poe, who was 27 years old, married his 13-year-old cousin Virginia Clemm. The couple stayed at Hiram Haines Coffee House on Bank Street, in what is now Old Towne Petersburg. Though Poe has been the subject of more than 300 biographies, many of which mention his Richmond wedding, few note the honeymoon the couple spent in Petersburg and none has ever delved into the event in any detail.

This lecture likely marks the first public discussion of Poe’s honeymoon and reveals fascinating material that has been hidden for more than a century, including relics from the building’s restoration-in-progress.

Using rare photos, drawings and rarely seen court records, Abugel will discuss the history of the building in which the pair honeymooned, the correspondence between Poe and Hiram Haines, the local newspaper editor who served as their host, and the many coincidences that marked their ongoing relationship.

Attendees will be able to purchase a copy of the limited edition print “Poe’s Honeymoon,” by Richmond artist Sterling Hundley. The prints are limited to 200 and were signed and numbered by the artist at the honeymoon site.

Abugel has been a magazine editor and writer for more than 30 years. He has written for House Beautiful, Woman’s Day, Traditional Home and many other national magazines. He is the former editor of Better Homes & Gardens’ Home Plan Ideas and head of the Better Homes & Gardens’ house plans department.

HPF is a non-profit organization dedicated to leading the preservation and restoration of Petersburg's historic architecture and neighborhoods and to tell their story.

For more information on the presentation, call HPF at (804) 732-2096.

Dead Poets of America Tour 1914 East Main Street, Richmond VA
Poe Museum
DEAD POETS COME TO LIFE IN RICHMOND

On Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 7 P.M., the Dead Poets Society of America Tour will be making its only Virginia stop at the Poe Museum at 1914 East Main Street in Richmond, and the public is invited to join them for readings of great deceased Virginia poets. Among those reading are “who’s who” of the Commonwealth’s best living poets, including former Poet Laureate of Virginia, Carolyn Keiter-Foronda, and President of the Poetry Society of Virginia, Ed Lull. Six poets are scheduled to perform. Admission is free. The readings begin at 7 P.M. The doors open at 6:30 P.M.

The Dead Poets Society of America is the creation of Maine poet Walter Skold, and its 2010 tour will visit 22 states to recite poetry at the graves of each state’s greatest dead poets. The 1,600-mile, 34-day schedule will begin in Portland, Maine, on April 23rd, and end in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 24th. Stops along the route also include Lincoln’s Tomb, in Springfield, IL; the Poe Museum, in Richmond, VA; and Swan Point Cemetery, in Providence, Rhode Island, where Poe courted the poetess Sarah Whitman. Along the way they are going to visit some of the most and least-well known deceased poets in the US, including Robert Lowell, Donald Justice, James Whitcomb Riley, John Trumball, Henry Timrod, Abram Ryan, and Sarah Whitman.

Walter Skold’s goal with the tour is to establish October 7 (the anniversary of Poe’s death) as Dead Poets Remembrance Day. “The Dead Poets Remembrance Day will be an opportunity for people all over to learn about the amazing history and diversity of American poets, as well as a way to remember them for their contribution to American literature,” he said. “We are launching this tour in order to encourage people in every state to get together on October 7th to honor our dead poets by reading at the grave of a poet near them,” said Walter Skold, the founder of the Dead Poets Society of America. More information on the Dead Poets Society of America is available at http://deadpoets.typepad.com/dpsablog/

Founded in 1921, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum of Richmond is the world’s finest collection of Edgar Allan Poe artifacts and memorabilia. The five-building complex features permanent exhibits of Poe’s manuscripts, personal items, clothing, and a lock of the author’s hair. The Poe Museum’s mission is to interpret the life and influence of Edgar Allan Poe for a global audience. Edgar Allan Poe is America’s first internationally influential author, the inventor of the detective story, and the forerunner of science fiction; but he primarily considered himself a poet. His poems “The Raven,” “Annabel Lee,” and “The Bells” are classics of world literature.
